Ethiopia Earns Global Recognition for Protecting Public Health from Tobacco Industry Interference
Ethiopia has earned global recognition for its strong commitment to protecting public health from tobacco industry influence. In the 2025 Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index, the country scored 35, ranking among the nations with the least industry interference. This achievement culminated in Ethiopia receiving the 2025 GGTC Integrity Award, reflecting coordinated policy action, firm governance, and active civil society engagement.
Enforcement efforts by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) have strengthened progress. Addressing violations of the national ban on tobacco-related CSR has been crucial for denormalizing the industry. In 2024, regional authorities took action against a JTI–NTE-sponsored community Hall in Sidama, closing the facility and issuing a formal warning citing legal prohibitions on tobacco industry sponsorships or contributions. In 2025, Ethiopia also advanced by adopting a new code of conduct for non-health sectors, ensuring consistent safeguards across government.
As countries gather at COP11 to reaffirm global cooperation in tobacco control, Ethiopia’s recognition serves as both an inspiration and a call to maintain momentum. The 2025 milestone reinforces the nation’s commitment to protecting youth, strengthening regulation, and upholding governance built on transparency and integrity.
