The Mathiwos Wondu Foundation, which has been in existence for 22 years, has officially announced that it has changed its previous name, “Mathiwos Wondu – YeEthiopia Cancer Society,” to “Mathiwos Wondu Foundation,” along with a new logo.
At the event organized for this announcement, the Foundation’s Board Chair, Dr. Yetnayet Abebe, delivered a welcome speech. She stated that the organization, which started its work from a family home by transforming the grief of losing a child into an opportunity to help others, has achieved remarkable accomplishments over the past two decades. She emphasized that, beyond supporting many cancer patients and their families, the Foundation has also made significant contributions to the development of policies. She further noted that, in line with its growth, updating its name and logo had become necessary.
The Foundation’s Chief Executive Director, Mr. Wondu Bekele, explained the journey of the organization from its establishment to its current level. He shared that although he lost his child to cancer at the age of four, the organization has fulfilled its founding vision by supporting thousands of patients. He added that the Foundation currently employs 43 staff members and is implementing 10 projects, making a significant contribution at the national level. He also explained that improvements to the name and logo were made to better reflect the scope of its work.
He further highlighted that while the organization initially focused on cancer, it is now carrying out major activities at a national level addressing non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Metasebia Zewdu, Director of Resource Mobilization, Partnership, and Communication, presented details about the new name and logo, while Program Director Mr. Zelalem Mengistu presented the Foundation’s strategic plan for the coming five years.
Representatives of government institutions, partner organizations, and stakeholders who attended the event commended the Foundation for its contributions, including supporting the enactment of tobacco control laws and helping Ethiopia establish a cancer control plan, as well as its care for patients. Finally, the Chief Executive Director, Mr. Wondu Bekele, announced the launch of a major project called the “Healthy Africa Project.” He also noted that the Addis Ababa City Administration has provided 10,000 square meters of land for the project and called on all stakeholders to collaborate and support the initiative.
