Ethiopian PEN-Plus National Operational Planning – stakeholders and partners introductory & Kick-off meeting conducted in Addis Ababa.

Mathiwos Wondu – YeEthiopia Cancer Society (MWECS) in collaboration with Ministry of Health of Ethiopia organized a meeting on National operational planning of Ethiopian PEN Plus project.
The Chief Executive Director of Mathews Wondu – YeEthiopia Cancer Society, Mr. Wondu Bekele, said that the society is working on different projects to save many lives from Cancer and different Non-Communicable Disease. This stakeholder meeting is held to start the process of scale up the project at national level to provide quality NCDs care at primary hospital level.
As the Executive Director “Ethiopian PEN Plus” project is a support from NCDI Poverty Network. The project is an integrated strategy that builds on the World Health Organization’s Package of Essential Noncommunicable Disease Interventions (WHO PEN) in order to increase the quality of services for severe chronic NCDs at primary referral facilities. It also seeks to accelerate decentralization of services for common sever NCDs at primary care facilities.
Ato Wondu mentioned that PEN Plus project implemented in Addis Zemen and Muketuri primary hospitals to improve the quality of the health services by renovating clinics, provding nessary supplies , and training Health care Providers for the intiations of the services.
The guest of honour on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Lelisa Amanuel from Stae Miniter of Health office said that the time is important to give more attention for NCDs, and the Ministry’s work to control non-communicable diseases is in line with the PEN Plus initiative. He added, considering the need, we are in a position to scale up PEN Plus project to provide quality care at primary care facilities.
During this intial kick off meeting , National NCDs Strategies and NCDs Response, other partners scale up experience, overview of the PEN-Plus regional and global response update, Ethiopian PEN Plus project implementation milestones, and the PEN Plus national operational planning process was presented.
After a thorough discussion on the presentations and the way forward, a direction on how to form the National Operational Planning Technical working group to expidite the operational planning process .The Ministry of Health will play a crucial leading role to organize materlize National Operational Plan by October 2024.
