The 20th anniversary of the Mathiwos Wondu – YeEthiopia Cancer Society was celebrated in the presence of invited journalists,members,patients and their families by giving press release and briefing on society’ major achievements and challenges.

Mr. Wondu Bekele one of the founding members and CEO of the Society, recalled that the society was founded on April 17 following the death of baby Mathiwos Wondu due to blood cancer.

Although the Society was founded on the cause of childhood cancer, over the past 20 years it has been educating the community and supporting the development of various policies to prevent non-communicable diseases, he said.

Since its inception, it has spent 20 years working on pediatric cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer and non-communicable diseases and its risk factors.He also said that they made a lot of efforts since launching an anti-tobacco campaign by supporting Ethiopia to pass one of the strongest and toughest laws on tobacco and alcohol.

He noted that  the Society has supported more than 3,000 cancer patients and their families, and they are currently supporting more than 164 cancer patients and families, over the years the society transformed itself in to one of the most respected and trusted NGOs of its kind and for these in the past 5 years alone MWECS received 5 international and 2 national a total of 7 awards.

 

He thanked all those who have supported, especially the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia , Regional Health and Finance Bureaus, the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority, the World Health Organization (WHO) Ethiopia office, the partners and all those who have supported and cooperated in various ways, members of the Society, leaders, staff and patients and families.

On her part, the Chairman of the Board of the Society, Dr. Yetnayet Abebe, thanked the Ministry of Health and accountable institutions for the successful years that the Society has traveled thus far and wished them more success in the coming years.
