
Code of Conduct MoU Signing Ceremony between Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) and National Tobacco Control Coordinating Committee (NTCCC) Members to Accelerate Transparent and Accountable Tobacco Control Implementation;
The EFDA and members of the NTCCC have officially adopted a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that includes a Code of Conduct (CoC) aimed at limiting unnecessary interactions with the tobacco industry. The MoU also proactively promotes accountability and transparency among committee members particularly Non Health sectors .

The official signing ceremony was held today, June 24, 2025, at the Haile Grand Hotel.
During the ceremony, Ms. Heran Gerba, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), highlighted that the Government of Ethiopia adopted the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2004 and began its implementation in 2014 to address the wide-ranging health, social, and economic harms caused by tobacco use in all its forms.

She emphasized the importance of the newly signed MoU , in non-health sectors in accelerating tobacco control efforts, particularly in strengthening accountability and transparency .
Ms. Heran also recalled that the Food and Drug Administration issued Proclamation No. 1112/2011, which provides a legal foundation for regulating tobacco products in Ethiopia.
She also expressed her gratitude to the Mathiwos Wondu–Ye Ethiopia Cancer Society and the Health Development & Anti-Malaria Association for their efforts in coordinating the signing of the agreement. MWECS is one of the lead partners in accelerating this national effort and was among the key parties involved in the signing of the MoU.
