PROJECTs
Ethiopian PEN-Plus Implementation Project
The Ethiopian PEN-Plus Implementation Project for Chronic Care of Severe NCDs at Primary Hospitals level is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in rural communities. PEN-Plus is an integrated care delivery strategy focusing on severe NCDs like Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatic Heart Disease, Sickle Cell Disease, and others in lower-income countries. The project, funded by the NCDI Poverty Network, aims to increase access to high-quality care for severe NCDs at the primary hospital level. The project is being implemented in Amhara and Oromia regions, with key activities including capacity building, renovation of facilities, procurement of medical equipment and supplies, mentorship programs, and psychosocial support. The ultimate goal is to scale up the PEN-Plus implementation nationwide to reach disadvantaged groups with limited access to quality NCD care. The project has made significant progress in enhancing care provision, improving documentation systems, providing social support, and strengthening referral networks. Despite challenges like poor documentation systems and supply chain issues, the project continues to make strides in improving the quality of care for severe NCDs and empowering communities to better manage these conditions.
