In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society (MWECS), we reflect on the remarkable journey that began with the courage and love of Mathiwos’ parents, Mr. Wondu Bekele and Mrs. Amsale Beyene. Mathiwos, a beloved son who fought a brave battle against cancer from a tender age, inspired the creation of MWECS in 2004 as a tribute to his legacy and a beacon of hope for families facing similar challenges. What started as a humble initiative focused on pediatric cancer has evolved into a renowned organization addressing various cancer types, major risk factors like tobacco use, and advocating for non-communicable disease prevention in Ethiopia.

Over the years, MWECS has garnered international acclaim and recognition for its impactful work, receiving prestigious awards that acknowledge its dedication to improving cancer care and support services. With a committed team of staff, volunteers, and esteemed board members, MWECS continues to provide vital assistance to over 360 cancer patients and their caregivers, offering financial, emotional, and educational support to ensure no one faces cancer alone. From supporting transport and treatment expenses to providing psychosocial care and education, MWECS exemplifies compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication to the cancer community in Ethiopia. As we honor the past achievements and milestones of MWECS, we look ahead with renewed commitment to empowering communities, inspiring change, and creating a brighter future for all those affected by cancer.
