World No Tobacco Day 2020 Award sent from Dr. Tedros Adhanom, World Health Organization Director General from Geneva Head Office, Switzerland officially handed over to Mr. Wondu Bekele Woldemariam, Executive Director of Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society/MWECS/ at the program held at Elily Hotel on July 16,2020. Mr. Wondu Bekele is one of the six recipients of this award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the tobacco control in their respective countries. The handover ceremony was delayed due to Covid-19 physical distancing guideline.
H.E.Dr. Lia Tadesse, Ministry of Health, Dr. Bouremia Hama Sambo, Director WHO Ethiopia Office, Miss Heran Gerba, Director General of Ethiopian Food & Drug Authority were Invited Honorable Guests.
All three guests appreciated the nomination of Mr. Wondu Bekele for the World NO Tobacco Day Award 2020 as well deserved & thanked him for his outstanding contribution to noncommunicable diseases control in general & tobacco control in particular. Among many contributions made & the leading role played by Mr. Wondu Bekele in the concerted effort being made to ratify Framework Convention on Tobacco Control/FCTC/ & strong excise tax imposed on tobacco, alcohol etc. by House of Representatives mentioned as main reasons for his nomination.
Mr. Wondu Bekele thanked WHO for the nomination & received the award on behalf of MWECS management, staffs, members, volunteers, supporters, donors and all partners & stakeholders led by Ministry of Health, Ethiopian Food & Drug Authority. He also reaffirmed his commitment to save lives of Ethiopians from needlessly affected & dying from preventable tobacco burden & contribute his share in the effort to transform Ethiopia into a better place to live & work.
